As temperatures drop, homeless women in our community face increasingly dangerous conditions, says Dr. Siu Mee Cheng, executive director of Street Haven at the Crossroads.

Held on Sunday, the organization’s annual Walking Home Walkathon addresses this critical issue by raising awareness and vital funds for services supporting homeless women—many of whom are left without adequate shelter or resources during the colder months.

A Growing Need

Toronto’s homeless women face unique challenges, such as limited shelter options, long waits for addiction treatment, and a support system that often struggles to meet demand. Despite government funding, current resources are insufficient to meet the rising demand, leaving women vulnerable, especially as winter approaches.

“The Street Haven Walkathon is more than a fundraiser—it’s a call to action,” said Dr. Cheng. “We urge individuals to engage with politicians, advocate for policy changes, and contribute financially or through volunteer work.”

A Beacon of Hope

This year’s Walkathon rallied hundreds of compassionate individuals who share a common goal: supporting vulnerable women on their journey toward independence and empowerment.

The Walkathon raised more than $27,000, over halfway toward its goal of $50,000. These funds will directly support women’s services, addressing critical needs in shelter, addiction treatment, mental health care, life skills training, and more.

Dr. Cheng notes the event also demonstrates the community’s deep commitment to the well-being of homeless women.

“We’re not only raising funds; we’re sparking conversations and inspiring action,” she added. “Together, we can create a world where every woman has a safe haven to call home.”
