In the heart of Downtown East, several organizations are working tirelessly to combat food insecurity and support vulnerable populations. We’re highlighting some of these vital programs, focusing on their efforts to provide nutritious meals and essential services. These initiatives play a crucial role in fostering a sense of community and offering support to those in need.
The 519 – Meal Trans
This program offers hot meals for those who are 2 Spirit, trans women, trans men, non-binary, genderqueer, and questioning. If you’re low-income, street-active, experiencing homelessness, and/or engaged in sex work, this drop-in program is for you. Enjoy a chance to connect with the community, access support, and discover referrals in this trans-only space.
Beth Sholom – Out of the Cold
Operating at St. Luke’s United, this program serves over 650 hot meals weekly on Sundays and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 pm. It also provides clothing, entertainment, an art program, BINGO, a bagged lunch, and more. Volunteers deliver meals to encampments, gathering overdose prevention sites.
Daily Bread – Allan Gardens Food Bank
Serving the Downtown East area, Allan Gardens Food Bank provides nutritious food with dignity and respect. Located at St. Luke’s United, it offers a community-focused, non-judgmental environment. Clients can visit once a week and are encouraged to bring their own bags.
Community Matters – Adult Nutrition
Adults Plus helps 60-80 isolated seniors in St. James Town stay in their homes and connected to the community. The program offers culturally-appropriate services, community interaction, and skills development for those looking for employment in senior care.
Metropolitan United – Community Meal Program
Metropolitan United Church continues its mission to support the vulnerable in Toronto’s downtown core with its Summer Community Meal Program. Running from June through September, this program addresses food insecurity by serving meals every Friday. It provides a welcoming environment for those in need.
Trinity Square Café

The café provides nutritious meals and helps clients develop essential skills through weekday shifts, fostering community connections and personal growth.
