Combatting Loneliness in the 2SLGBTQ+ Community

June 10, 2024

Research highlights this troubling reality. A study involving nearly 8,000 LGBTQ individuals found that marginalization is closely linked with loneliness, exacerbated by self-stigma and social anxiety. Closer to home, a recent Angus Reid Institute study reveals that visible minorities, Indigenous Canadians, and 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in Canada face higher levels of social isolation and loneliness compared to the general population.

Seniors in the 2SLGBTQ+ community are particularly vulnerable due to the combined effects of aging and marginalization.

To address these challenges, here are some strategies and resources to help foster connections and combat loneliness:

Check out Queer Media

Representation matters. Watching shows, reading books, and following social media accounts that reflect your identity can help you feel seen and understood. Explore popular queer media outlets like OUTtv, Revry, Here TV, Advocate, and Attitude.

Join Events and Groups

Engage in local 2SLGBTQ+ events and activities. Community centres like The 519 and organizations like Pride Toronto offer various programs and social gatherings. These events provide opportunities to meet new people and build connections.

Seek Supportive Spaces

Online platforms and local support groups can provide safe spaces to connect with others who share similar experiences. Resources like LGBT Youth Line and MyGrief.ca offer confidential support for those struggling with loneliness and other challenges.

Volunteer

Get involved in community initiatives. Volunteering not only helps others but also fosters a sense of belonging. Consider joining local organizations or initiatives that align with your interests and values. By giving back, you might just find that you don’t have to be alone in this journey.

Practice Self-Care

Taking care of your mental and emotional well-being is essential. Engage in activities that bring joy and relaxation, such as hobbies, exercise, and spending time in nature. Prioritizing self-care can help you manage feelings of loneliness and improve your overall well-being.

Engaging with these resources and strategies can help members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community find support, build connections, and reduce feelings of loneliness.
